The Day of Service celebrates the arrival of the new citizens of Cambridge and Boston and underscores the Harvard College expectation that students will engage with these communities from the very start of their College experience. We invite first-year students to begin to learn about local communities through service projects in local public schools, community centers, parks, and recreation facilities. The projects include light landscaping, painting and cleaning classrooms, and preparing play or teaching kits for after-school programs. Our goals for the Day of Service are to introduce first-year students to local public service opportunities as well as to imprint them with a civic orientation that we hope expands during their years at Harvard College and beyond.
