Kerry  McGowan

While attending Boston College, Kerry McGowan was involved in the PULSE program, a service learning program, volunteering at a placement where he tutored teens at a group home and served on the PULSE council. Kerry joined the Peace Corps after college, and taught in a high school in northeast Thailand for 2½ years. He returned to Thailand to provide teacher training in a refugee camp for an additional 2 years. Back in the United States, he worked for a refugee program for six years then as a social worker for the Department of Social Services for three years. He also taught ESL to adults for the City of Cambridge. He obtained his Masters in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2002. Kerry provides trainings on teaching ESL, the immigration/refugee experience, and adult learning. He finds working with committed, thoughtful student volunteers and leaders inspirational.

The Director of Programs supports the student leaders of PBHA and mentors them in non-profit program management. Kerry currently works with the programs of Dorchester and Chinatown, the refugee and immigrant programs, ESOL programs, elderly programs, and the prisoner education programs.
