Our student engagement and leadership programs play an integral role in Harvard College's mission and public purpose. A survey from last year's graduating class found that 80% of Harvard College students engage in public service during their time in college. Just prior to the start of the school year, over 100 incoming first-year students participate in a week-long, student-led and staff supported First-Year Urban Program (FUP). During orientation week, over 1,500 first-year students participate in a day of service in partnership with Boston Public Schools and the City of Cambridge. For many students, this provides an introduction to new communities, including the residential community, faculty, and staff leaders at Harvard College. Throughout the fall and spring semesters, Harvard College supports approximately 110 student-led service programs that provide a variety of resources to youth and adults in underserved communities. Students engage in work that directly addresses issues related to poverty and social inequality through programs that work to end youth homelessness, improve civic education in public schools, and connect vulnerable populations to critical social services.
