Growing up in Jersey City, NJ, I came to naturally envision the best in both my local and global community. I had the privilege of being raised in a city that was racially and ethnically diverse, accommodating, and equitable. However, as time progressed, I began to see the flaws in the great tapestry of my community, the lack of access to certain resources and the impact on youth in my community. Many of my fellow peers fell victim to truancy, substance abuse, and lack of mental health support. I sought to combat these issues by holding educational sessions in the past, holding toiletry and food drives, as well as providing members of my community access to peer counselors. This past summer, I held regular Mental Health counseling sessions with the support of Harvard's SPARK Program to a number of youth in my community, and spoke to my school board about instituting more resources for mental health support. I hope to use a combination of direct and educational resources to assist those in my community today, and create a better environment for tomorrow.
