Graduate Student Position (Summer of Service)

Position: Graduate Assistant

Location: USA – MA – Boston; remote assistance not in consideration

Pay: $25/hr

Time status: Part-time (10-16 hours) in the Spring; potential for full-time in the Summer **MUST be available in the summer; possibility of work in the Fall, as well

Duties & Responsibilities

The Phillips Brooks House Center for Public Service & Engaged Scholarship (PBH) seeks a Graduate Assistant to partner with PBH staff, including Dean, Directors, Department Administrator, Fellows, and Students, on a summer of service initiative for pre-matriculated students at Harvard College. The Graduate Assistant will report the Service to Society Fellow. Duties and responsibilities as follows:

Administrative Support

Manages scheduling for team meetings, including meetings with staff and students. Performs a wide range of confidential and non-confidential administrative duties that support staff, students, and the summer of service initiative. Anticipates and resolves problems; updates Service to Society Fellow on the status of projects and tasks. Supports each of the group leaders designated for the success of the initiative. Coordinates flow of the initiative. Creates schedules and project manages initiative. Maintains accurate and organized electronic and paper files for staff.

Communications Support

Provides communications support for PHB staff. Processes incoming email related to the initiative. May be asked to review published information to better understand landscape of public service in higher education. Reviews applications. Works closely with Harvard College offices and departments. Prepares documents and correspondence, and reviews and edits materials.

Student Support

Acts as liaison between PBH staff, students, and organizations involved in the initiative, including answering incoming messages, as well as acting as the point person prior to, during, and after the initiative. Supports students before they leave for their sites, during and after their service work. Thinks creatively about how to best solve problems. Will be asked to assist with online student support through Canvas or related software. Will be asked to act as a facilitator for students’ online discussions and reflection. May be asked to create, edit, and develop digital media and written communications as required. May be asked to assist with student surveys, basic data analysis, and reports. Collects, reviews, and edits communications materials, PowerPoint presentations and other deliverables.

Ideal Graduate Assistant candidates will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence.

Basic Qualifications

Be enrolled in a graduate program at one of Harvard’s schools. Two or more years of academic administration experience. Education beyond high school may count toward experience.

Additional Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational skills with particular ability to prioritize work in an environment with multiple and conflicting interests.
  • Proven project and/or program management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion.
  • Harvard experience a plus.
